Monday, October 12, 2026 - 12:14

The team behind the VSL on Palliative Care project, carried out under the auspices of the Center for Interdisciplinary Health Research (CIIS) at the Faculty of Health Sciences and Nursing (FCSE) of the Portuguese Catholic University, met in Helsinki, Finland.

The meeting was attended by researchers Paulo Vaz de Carvalho, Mara Moita, Manuel Luís Capelas, Tânia Afonso, and Inês Santos from the Faculty of Health Sciences and Nursing at the Portuguese Catholic University, who are involved in the project. The project also includes the collaboration of other team members who were unable to attend, thus bridging the fields of sign language and palliative care.

The European project “Vocational Sign Language on Palliative Care” aims to promote the inclusion of deaf and hard-of-hearing people in access to palliative care, helping to improve communication between these individuals and healthcare professionals.

In this context, one of the project’s main initiatives is the development of training resources in sign language and accessible communication, aimed at professionals who work or intend to work in the field of palliative care.

Through international collaboration between experts in linguistics and palliative care, the project seeks to contribute to more inclusive care delivery by promoting access to information and a better response to the needs of deaf people.

The project will run through August 2027 and is being carried out by an international consortium of institutions from Portugal, Finland, Italy, and Turkey.
