On February 11, 2026, the 34th World Day of the Sick will be celebrated, with the theme “The compassion of the Samaritan: loving by bearing the pain of others,” chosen by Pope Leo XIV. This date, established by St. John Paul II in 1992, calls for the recognition of the face of Christ in people who suffer from illness.
This year's theme focuses on the Gospel figure of the Samaritan, who represents love of neighbor and compassion. This man from Samaria encountered another man in distress on his way and was able to welcome him, carrying him on his shoulders until he found a safe place.
Unlike others who passed by, saw him, and ignored him, continuing on their way, the Samaritan felt called by his suffering. And he acted. This passage from the Gospel of Luke is paradigmatic for healthcare.
