Perinatal mental health care continues to come too late for many women, still caught between the idealization of motherhood and a healthcare system that focuses first on the body and only then on psychological distress.
In an interview, Graça Gonçalves, coordinator of the Graduate Program in Integrated Perinatal Mental Health Care at the Faculty of Health Sciences and Nursing of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, advocates for an integrated approach capable of caring for the mother, the baby, and the family before exhaustion turns into a crisis.
